School After School for Successful Youth (SASSY)

Founded in 1986, the SASSY program is an after-school vocational training program for students from the Ravenswood City School District (RCSD), Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD) and the Palo Alto Unifed School District. Students who enroll in SASSY may earn up to 10 academic credits each semester for participating in the program. These credits are awarded based on a combination of the number of training hours completed (class attendance), completion of class projects, completion of other program components, and overall effort and participation. Grades are reported on a quarterly basis; credits are issued only at the end of the fall and spring terms. This information is sent to each student's school and recorded on his/her official SUHSD high school transcript. SASSY classes meet after school for 4-6 hours per week, depending upon the subject matter.

Occupational Skills Training & Education Services
The SASSY program offers the following classes during the school year. All classes offer Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD) and Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) students the chance to earn up to 10 units of academic credit each semester.

Youth Programs

JobTrain offers to our community's youth several programs and services, each of which helps them focus on educational success, employment readiness, job skills, life skills, and practical goal setting. Students between the ages of 14 and 21 are eligible to receive vocational training, tutoring in basic skills, GED preparation, and job placement assistance. In our last fiscal year, 229 students were involved in our youth programs, with 116 enrolled in School After School For Successful Youth (SASSY) and 113 in Sponsored Employment Program (SEP).

SASSY

Students earned credits toward their high school diplomas by completing courses usually not offered in traditional high school settings. Classes include: Digital Multimedia, Culinary Arts, Electronics, or Fine Arts. Students may begin earning credits while in the 8 th grade, and the credits earned are transferred to their high schools after matriculation. This ensures that students begin on the right path toward completing high school on-time and with an idea in mind as to the interests they may want to pursue in the future.

SEP

Students complete 6-week summer jobs in order to gain hands-on experience in the working world. Youth are placed in a variety of jobs, including office assistance, restaurant work, maintenance work, and several other areas. Students learn the importance of punctuality, diligence, and working hard while understanding the value of earning money and managing their finances. Youth in this program include those with the most challenging barriers to overcome for successful employment, such as involvement with the juvenile justice system and those on the verge of dropping out of school.
